Death toll from cold wave on rise in Terai

Lahan, Jan 9 – Two more people breathed their last in Siraha owing to sharp fall of mercury since the recent past.

Makodevi Paswan, 41, of Laxmipur Patari rural municipality-6, Sitapur in Siraha died of shivering cold today. Paswan belonging to most disadvantaged family lost their life to biting cold at her home, said former Chairperson of Sitapur VDC, Dev Narayan Saha.

Earlier, the cold wave took the life of five-year-old Kajal Kumari Mandal who was at her maternal uncle’s home at Golbazaar yesterday evening.

Affected by Pneumonia due to growing cold, she died on the way to Lahan-based hospital for want of treatment.

With this, the death toll caused by cold in Siraha has reached five.

Before this, Shambhu Saha’s six-year-old son of Golbazaar municipality-4 Luv JKumar Saha, Ram Prasad Mahato of Golbazaar-2, Laalpur and Ram Ratan mahato, 55, of Dhangadhimai municipality-7, Kasaha died of shivering cold on Sunday.

The extreme cold has adversely affected normal life in Siraha of late.

Meanwhile, Durga Devi Chaudhary, 65, of Surunga munciplaity-11 of Saptari died of extreme cold.

It was confirmed by Deputy Superintendant of Police (DSP) of Saptari Dhruba Kumar Shrestha. With this, the death toll from shivering cold has reached 20 in Saptari. However, police have confirmed the death of only eight.
