President’s call for immediate treatment of survivors

Kathmandu, April 1 – President Bidya Devi Bhandari has drawn the attention of the authorities concerned towards making immediate arrangement for the treatment of the people injured in the heavy storm in Bara and Parsa on Sunday evening. Issuing a statement here today, she has also expressed profound sorrow over the huge damage caused to human life and property, and extended heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family. She has wished for speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.
In her statement, the President has also emphasized on the need to adopt strong measures of disaster risk reduction and adopt precaution to minimize damages caused by natural calamity like floods, landslides, storm and fire.
In a similar statement, Vice-President Nanda Bahadur Pun has expressed the confidence that the government would give special attention to rescue and treatment of the injured, and relief, rehabilitation to the survivors. He has also hoped for support from all Nepali brothers and sisters at home and abroad to those affected by this unprecedented scale of natural disaster.

PM Oli reaches out to storm survivors in Bara

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has reached out to the survivors of the Sunday storm in Bara district. At least 27 people were killed and over 100 others were injured when a massive storm hit some areas of Bara and Parsa districts on Sunday evening.

On the occasion, PM Oli directed the local administration to provide prompt rescue and relief efforts to the victims, said PM Oli’s press coordinator Chetan Adhikari. Chief district officer Rajesh Poudel briefed PM Oli on the situation there. PM Oli, who is on his visit to reach out to the storm survivors and inquire about the situation, reached Bara after inspecting the disaster-hit Parsa district.

The total 27 people were killed in the disaster that occurred around 8 pm on Sunday, said Poudel. Kalaiya sub metropolitan city, Mahagadhimai and Pacharauta municipalities, Prasauni, Feta, Subarna and Parawani rural municipalities have been hit hard.

Meanwhile, Nepal Communist Party has committed donation of one day’s salary of its lawmakers to the storm survivors in relief. PM Oli, who is also chairperson of the NCP, urged party leaders and cadres to involve in rescue and relief distribution efforts.

PM Oli at Kalaiya hospital

Prime Minister Oli met with people who were injured in Sunday’s rainstorm and undergoing treatment at the Kalaiya hospital. He inquired about the health condition of 49 storm survivors at the hospital and urged the authorities concerned to make every possible arrangement for their treatment.

On the occasion, Dr Sachendra Kumar Yadav apprised the Prime Minister of the health condition of those admitted at the hospital. He was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Upendra Yadav and Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa.

Following the visit, the team led by the Prime Minister left for Birgunj to meet with the injured at the Narayan Sub-regional hospital.

Call to join hands in relief and rescue

Kathmandu, April 1 – Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has urged the government to make immediate arrangement of rescue and treatment of the injured and relief and compensation to the families of those who died in the rainstorm in Bara and Parsa on Sunday evening. Issuing a statement here today, the leader of the main opposition party has also expressed profound sorrow over the demise of more than three dozen people and injury to hundreds in the incident, and extended heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family.
Stating that the party Vice-chair Bimalendra Nidhi has left for the affected site, party chair Deuba has also directed all party central members and cadres to join the post-disaster rescue, rehabilitation and relief works. He also appealed to all for their support at this time of grief.

Govt shows prompt rescue efforts to storm survivors

Kathmandu, April 1- The government has shown prompt rescue efforts to the victims of the huge storm that killed at least 27 people and injured over 400 others in various parts of Bara and Parsa districts on Sunday evening.
Various health workers’ teams have been sent to the affected areas, while ministers have reached out to the disaster survivors. Deputy Minister and Minister for Health and Population Upendra Yadav, state minister Dr Surendra Yadav, Secretary Chandra Kumar Ghimire and director general of the Department of Health Services Dr Gunaraj Lohani have reached the incident sites and inquired about the situation there. The ministry has dispatched a team comprising doctors and health workers led by joint secretaries Dr Ramesh Kharel and Dipendra Raman Singh, also the ministry’s division chief.
Of the injured, 11 have been referred to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu, two of them are reported to be in serious condition, the remaining are undergoing treatment at various hospitals–Narayani Sub Regional Hospital, National Medical College, Kalaiya Hospital, Advanced Hospital, Gandaki Hospital and Birgunj Health Care Unit, said the ministry.
“Additional medicines have been transported to the affected areas from the regional medicine store at Pathalaiya. The storm-hit areas have an adequate supply of medicines, drinking water and food items,” said the ministry’s spokesperson Mahendra Shrestha.
The emergency meeting held shortly after the disaster under chairpersonship of the state minister Dr Yadav had decided to launch prompt rescue, relief and treatment efforts.
The meeting also decided to dispatch various teams consisting of doctors and health workers from Janakpur, Hetauda and Chitwan to the disaster areas. “Additional workforce and medical teams are on standby in Kathmandu,” said Shrestha. Five ambulances have been available at the Tribhuvan International Airport to take the injured to hospitals in the Kathmandu valley, he said, adding that ambulances have been also sent to the affected districts.
There is no scarcity of blood to treat the injured, said executive director of the Nepal Red Cross Society Umesh Dhakal. “Volunteers have been mobilised for rescue and relief efforts. Blood is available in nearby districts and Kathmandu for the treatment of the injured,” he said.
Likewise, Nepal Army has also dispatched three separate teams including doctors and health workers to the disaster sites. “We will send additional health workers as per need,” Brigadier General Arun Kumar Neupane said.
